Akon’s business instincts were as sharp as his musical talent.
On a 2023 episode of Drink Champs, he broke down how he tapped into the mid-2000s ringtone craze. While most artists were chasing radio hits, Akon was engineering songs with ringtones in mind. He crafted hooks so catchy they sounded great even in just a few seconds.
At the time, ringtones were selling for $4.99. That was more than double the price of a full-length single. Akon saw the margin, saw the trend, and moved fast.
It paid off. By the end of 2007, he had sold over 11 million master ringtones. Guinness World Records named him the top-selling artist in that category.
